I have a ring that was recently given to me by my grandmother. It is very old and it is a little too big, so I would like to get it resized so I don’t lose it. Also the stone that is set in the ring seems to be shifting in its place. Is this something that can be fixed?

I’m answering from Colorado Springs. I contacted a goldsmith who asked a bunch of questions. It makes a difference whether you’re sizing up or down. You’re obviously sizing down which will mean adding some metal to the band. If your ring is silver, go to a silversmith. If gold, go to a goldsmith, because extra $ will be charged to switch mediums. Also, is the band of uniform witdth or wide in the front and narrow in the back? I know the jeweler I spoke with could fix the stone shifting problem. Sorry I don’t have a definitive answer for you as to the cost. If it were a matter of sizing up a little bit on a band of uniform witdth, the cost here would be $10. So, shooting from the hip, my gut response is that here in Colorado Springs your job would run $30-$70.
